To sleep or not to sleep

I came accross a post regarding sleep on Roya’s blog. I found some guidance on the issue, which I then proceeded to dichotomise:

These are they who… forsake their couches… flee from sleep in their eagerness to approach Thy presence…

(Bahá’u’lláh, Prayers and Meditations by Bahá’u’lláh, p. 143)

How can I choose to sleep…?

(Bahá’u’lláh, Prayers and Meditations by Bahá’u’lláh, p. 263)

It behoveth them not to rest for a moment, neither to seek repose.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Baha’i World Faith – ‘Abdu’l-Bahá Section, p. 441)

Rest thou not for a moment, seek thou to draw no easeful breath.

(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, p. 26)

Or:

Regarding your question: There are very few people who can get along without eight hours sleep. If you are not one of those, you should protect your health by sleeping enough. The Guardian himself finds that it impairs his working capacity if he does not try and get a minimum of seven or eight hours.

(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to two believers, September 15, 1952 – quoted in Lights of Guidance, p. 291)

I view a lot of these quotes as about our conciousness, rather than directly about sleeping. We should always be alert and ready to serve at all waking moments. But I’m also one of those people that needs my eight hours of sleep. My immune system gets very weak when I don’t get enough sleep. So I have to have a balance. I must take care of myself, ensuring that I do get enough sleep, so that all my waking moments are truly awake 🙂
